The upright vacuum sits on the floor and works when you push it. It uses suction to remove dirt and debris from carpet and area rugs.
A word of caution: because of the strong suction created by a good upright vacuum, you must make sure that area rugs are sturdy enough to hold up to being vacuumed with this type of vacuum.

The Canister Vacuum
Unlike the upright, the canister vacuum has different attachments that are used for different jobs.
