Have you ever wondered what the big deal is? I mean, why SHOULD you clean your house?

It all boils down to just two basic reasons:

#1 — To keep yourself and your family healthy

#2 — To protect your investment

Let’s look at these …

To Keep Yourself and Your Family Healthy

Mold. Mildew. Dust. Bugs. Germs. These are five health foes that have the potential to ambush us in our homes.

Yes, we need to be ever vigilant in our battle against them. Perhaps the best way is to keep our homes clean.

Mold and mildew can grow in moist areas like bathrooms … especially showers. So we need to clean the surfaces that they like to call home and kill these fungi before they affect our health and the health of our family.

Prolonged exposure to mold and mildew can cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems. Symptoms can include coughing, headache, or a scratchy throat.

Household dust also can cause allergic reactions and can trigger asthma symptoms in some people. Symptoms of a dust allergy can include a runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and sneezing. Asthma symptoms include wheezing, coughing, tightness of the chest, and shortness of breath.

Bugs also can trigger allergic reactions, as well as spread germs and bacteria around, posing a health threat to you and your family. You can find a discussion about household pests and the dangers they pose at http://www.superpages.com/supertips/kill-household-bugs.html.

Lastly … germs. Unless your home is hermetically sealed off, you will be exposed to germs. Regular house cleaning is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of colds, flu, and other infectious diseases. Here’s a good article from WebMD about killing germs: http://www.webmd.com/parenting/d2n-stopping-germs-12/speed-cleaning-germs.

Of course, any health professional will tell you the absolute BEST way to prevent the spread of germs is to wash your hands … so don’t forget that, too!

To Protect Your Investment

Regular house cleaning is one of the best preventative maintenance tasks we can perform to protect what is probably the biggest purchase for most people — our home.

Think about it — dirt and grime can shorten the life span of materials used in our homes. For example, dirty carpet wears out much faster than when it is kept clean.

But dirt and grime also can hide symptoms of other structural problems. You might miss a growing water stain on the ceiling (a symptom of a leaky roof) if you never clean the ceiling. You might not notice cracked or missing grout, which can lead to additional water damage if you never clean your countertop, shower, or tile floor.

Not to mention the emotional equity you have invested in being able to enjoy your home. Most of us would agree that a clean home is more enjoyable than a dirty one!

Because your home IS such an important investment, it’s important to invest additional time and/or money to maintain it properly. Hiring a professional house cleaning service is certainly an option, but so is learning to do it yourself. If doing it yourself, make sure you do your research and are doing the necessary tasks correctly.

So, tell me, do YOU have other things that motivate you to clean your house? There are countless other motivating factors … why don’t you tell me some of yours in the comments below?

Until next time … Keep it clean!
