Back to School, Back to “Normal” Household Routines

Back to School

When kids are home from school for the summer, everything changes. You know what we mean …

Daily schedules have to be adjusted, and mealtimes and bedtimes are moved to accommodate new summer activities. You probably did more laundry, and either mopped or vacuumed the floor more, too.

Summer vacation also can mean out-of-town travel, and that throws your entire routine – house cleaning, too – off track. Isn’t it amazing that your house can get dirty when you weren’t even home?!

If you travelled or were away from home for a significant amount of time this summer, you probably have extra cleaning to do (dust and cobwebs are usually the biggest offenders). If the kids have been home all day throughout the summer, you probably have extra cleaning due to them as well (doorframes, window sills, glass doors and mirrors).

So when the kids go back to school, you can get back to your “normal” household routine … including a regular house cleaning schedule. You can simply settle into your regular house cleaning routine and do a little at a time, or you can schedule some extra time to get it all done at once.

Of course, if you’ve hired a professional house cleaning company to help keep your house clean, you should be able to schedule extra time with them to get those extra cleaning chores done while you do something else that you enjoy.

What “Back To School” cleaning chores do YOU tackle? Please tell us in a COMMENT below!

2 Basic Reasons to Clean Your Home

Posted in WHY hire a housecleaning service by Michele Peterson on January 30, 2013

Young women wearing rubber gloves and apron

Have you ever wondered what the big deal is? I mean, why SHOULD you clean your house?

It all boils down to just two basic reasons:

#1 — To keep yourself and your family healthy

#2 — To protect your investment

Let’s look at these …

To Keep Yourself and Your Family Healthy

Mold. Mildew. Dust. Bugs. Germs. These are five health foes that have the potential to ambush us in our homes.

Yes, we need to be ever vigilant in our battle against them. Perhaps the best way is to keep our homes clean.

Mold and mildew can grow in moist areas like bathrooms … especially showers. So we need to clean the surfaces that they like to call home and kill these fungi before they affect our health and the health of our family.

Prolonged exposure to mold and mildew can cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems. Symptoms can include coughing, headache, or a scratchy throat.

Household dust also can cause allergic reactions and can trigger asthma symptoms in some people. Symptoms of a dust allergy can include a runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and sneezing. Asthma symptoms include wheezing, coughing, tightness of the chest, and shortness of breath.

Bugs also can trigger allergic reactions, as well as spread germs and bacteria around, posing a health threat to you and your family. You can find a discussion about household pests and the dangers they pose at http://www.superpages.com/supertips/kill-household-bugs.html.

Lastly … germs. Unless your home is hermetically sealed off, you will be exposed to germs. Regular house cleaning is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of colds, flu, and other infectious diseases. Here’s a good article from WebMD about killing germs: http://www.webmd.com/parenting/d2n-stopping-germs-12/speed-cleaning-germs.

Of course, any health professional will tell you the absolute BEST way to prevent the spread of germs is to wash your hands … so don’t forget that, too!

To Protect Your Investment

Regular house cleaning is one of the best preventative maintenance tasks we can perform to protect what is probably the biggest purchase for most people — our home.

Think about it — dirt and grime can shorten the life span of materials used in our homes. For example, dirty carpet wears out much faster than when it is kept clean.

But dirt and grime also can hide symptoms of other structural problems. You might miss a growing water stain on the ceiling (a symptom of a leaky roof) if you never clean the ceiling. You might not notice cracked or missing grout, which can lead to additional water damage if you never clean your countertop, shower, or tile floor.

Not to mention the emotional equity you have invested in being able to enjoy your home. Most of us would agree that a clean home is more enjoyable than a dirty one!

Because your home IS such an important investment, it’s important to invest additional time and/or money to maintain it properly. Hiring a professional house cleaning service is certainly an option, but so is learning to do it yourself. If doing it yourself, make sure you do your research and are doing the necessary tasks correctly.

So, tell me, do YOU have other things that motivate you to clean your house? There are countless other motivating factors … why don’t you tell me some of yours in the comments below?

Until next time … Keep it clean!

House Cleaning Challenges for Those Who Live With Pets

Posted in Cleaning Tips,Mini Mops, Inc. by Michele Peterson on April 15, 2012

When you share your home with animals, you face special house cleaning challenges. Let’s talk about a few:

Dogs

One of the concerns new dog owners have is the “accident” in the house issue. But unless they’re puppies – or left by themselves for too long – most dogs are actually pretty good about the potty-training issue. Of course, you DO have to train them first!

Perhaps a bigger concern is what to do with all the hair that a dog can shed. There are some breeds that don’t seem to shed at all, some that shed only marginally, and then there are those that leave globs of hair all around the house … constantly … even in the dead of winter!

All that hair can be a house cleaning nightmare! It clogs a vacuum, sticks to surfaces you’re trying to remove it from, scatters again with the slightest puff of wind …

The key here is diligent maintenance. This includes cleaning your surfaces regularly, vacuuming often, not letting it get too built up and unmanageable.

Now, another concern with dogs that live inside is the dirt they bring in on their paws … and that will be mud in the rainy season.

You’re going to be mopping your hard-surface floors A LOT. And you might as well pre-schedule a carpet cleaning every couple of months or so … you’re going to need it.

Cats

Certain breeds of cats can shed just as much as some dogs. And your strategy for clean-up is the same as we discussed above.

A cat’s litter box – and the surrounding area – is a challenge all its own. And, by the way, most professional house cleaning companies won’t touch them for insurance and health safety reasons.

Fish

A properly maintained aquarium is indeed a thing of beauty and tranquility. Healthy fish are soothing and peaceful (which is why so many doctors install aquariums in their offices).

But the key words for fish are “properly maintained.”

A lot can go wrong with fish and aquariums, so please consult a professional for their recommendations and suggestions on best practices.

Birds

Birds are beautiful … beautifully messy! They tend to scatter seed everywhere. The cage needs to be cleaned regularly. And their feathers are actually dusty – especially during molting season.

What to do?

If you’re going to share your home with pets, you’re going to have to accept that your house cleaning routine will be different from that of a homeowner who does not.

You may be doing different cleaning tasks. You may be using special equipment. You likely will be cleaning more frequently.

If it gets to be too much, we hope that you will look into hiring a professional house cleaning service. Just be sure to ask about any pet policies when you’re doing your initial interview.

You don’t want to be surprised later.

Sometimes it’s OK to just let it go undone

It’s the weekend before Valentine’s Day. The weather is perfect for being outdoors. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT CLEAN YOUR HOUSE THIS WEEKEND!

Sometimes you just have to be OK with things not getting done. Sometimes you have to put other things first. I suggest that this weekend is one of those times.

Think of all the things you could do instead of cleaning your house this weekend: wine tasting with your sweetie, a bike ride with your kids, a day at the park with your dogs, a run in the park with your dogs … The list is truly endless, and there is no limit to the possibilities out there.

Some people clean a little bit every day so they never have to face an all-day cleaning job. Some people wait for the weekend and do the cleaning then. Some people hire a professional house cleaning service, but even if you hire a professional, I bet you still do some minor cleaning in between their visits.

But sometimes, you have to realize that there really is more to life than getting all the chores done. Sometimes, it’s really OK that the house is dirty.

Guess what … the dirt will still be there waiting for you next week. Let it wait!

What happens when SOMETHING happens?

So you’ve decided to pay a house cleaning company to clean your house. You’re enjoying the extra time that you suddenly have now that you aren’t spending so much time cleaning. You love the professional results.

Then SOMETHING happens.

Maybe a vase gets bumped, falls to the floor, and breaks. Maybe it’s a plate. Maybe a picture frame falls off the wall, and the glass breaks.

You could have done any of these things yourself … after all, accidents DO happen. But you didn’t. It was the cleaning company!

Accidents and breakages will happen with everyone at some time or another. But what sets the exceptional house cleaning company apart from everyone else is what happens next. What sets them apart is what happens when something happens.

An exceptional house cleaning company:
• will NOT try to hide or ignore the broken or damaged item,
• will immediately notify the homeowner of the broken or damaged item,
• will use the opportunity to train the workers on how to prevent the accident from happening again,
• will have upper management follow up with the homeowner regarding the incident.

The exceptional house cleaning company also will offer to repair or replace a broken or damaged item. (Many clients will not even want the item repaired or replaced, especially if it is a minor thing. But the important thing is that the company has offered.)

The exceptional house cleaning company has a written policy concerning damages in clients’ homes AND has that policy easily accessible to its clients.

Perhaps most importantly, the exceptional house cleaning company has proper insurance coverage to handle large losses. Clients should be able to see proof of this insurance coverage immediately upon request.

Accidents DO happen … accidents WILL happen. And it’s when they do that you find out if you’ve indeed placed your trust in the RIGHT house cleaning company.

A Clean Start to the New Year

Happy New Year!

As you’re putting holiday decor away and getting your home back to “normal,” you may be finding an increased amount of cleaning that needs to be done.

Don’t worry … this is common! It’s the same phenomenon that occurs when you move out and find lots of hidden dirt in the corners and around the edges of the rooms of your home.

This is actually a great time to do some of the extra cleaning that may not be part of your normal routine.

As you’re moving things around, dust the walls floor to ceiling with a dust mop. Clean the baseboards and other woodwork. Clean the faceplates of light switches and electrical outlets.

Dust and clean the items that you’re putting back into storage, and do the same with the items you’re bringing back out.

Of course, if you find you just don’t want to do this yourself, you can seek the professional help of a house cleaning company.

The new year is naturally a time of new beginnings and fresh starts. This year, why not make yours a CLEAN start as well?

Beat Holiday Stress by Outsourcing

Posted in Professional help by Michele Peterson on December 12, 2011
Tags: , , , , ,

We all love the holidays … or at least, we all love the idea of the holidays. We may have an image in our minds of what the perfect holiday looks like, tastes like, feels like. But how often does reality match this mental ideal?

Too often, we get stressed out because reality doesn’t match the ideal. We keep trying and pushing ourselves to make the holiday perfect, and, yet, this can become a self-defeating predicament. We keep trying harder, yet we just end up being more stressed, and the holiday becomes less and less perfect.

When you’re overwhelmed with a To-Do list that keeps growing instead of shrinking, one of the best things to do is delegate. Of course, you can delegate some things to your children, your spouse, and to other family members. You also can delegate — outsource — to a professional.

There are many professional services that can help you redirect your time and efforts to the things that you most enjoy and that are most valuable to you.

For example, let’s say you are hosting an open house for family and friends. You love to decorate, but baking may not be your thing. So you can outsource by getting a professionally-made dessert from a local bakery. Or you love to bake, but need help with a meal — outsource by getting the meal from a local restaurant or caterer.

You can save your own time and efforts by outsourcing your house cleaning, yard maintenance, decorating, dog walking … the list goes on and on!

The trick is to figure out which task, when outsourced, provides the maximum benefit to you by reducing the most stress. Once you do some soul-searching and have that figured out, you can move forward to find the best person/company/service professional to help you with that task.

Good luck, and be sure to post a comment about how outsourcing some part of your To-Do list has helped you this holiday season.

Wishing you a joyous holiday season!

Is your home Mother-In-Law ready?

Is your home ready for a suprise, drop-in visit from your mother-in-law?

Mother-In-Law

Is it ready for an impromptu “Girls Night” get-together? Or a last-minute dinner invitation issued by your spouse to his (or her) client/boss/co-worker?

If you have a professional house cleaning service, you should be able to confidently answer “YES!” to all of these questions.

Let’s face it … we are busy people these days, and cleaning the house, while necessary and important, often is not a top priority. Even a stay at home mom or retiree has multiple obligations that take time and energy, often leaving little left for those house cleaning chores.

Enter the housecleaning professionals.

A good house cleaning service will work with you to figure out just what chores you need help with. Maybe you can keep your kitchen counters clean but you need help to scrub the floors. Maybe you clean the bathroom mirrors when they get splattered but you need help with the soap scum in the shower. Maybe you want help with it all.

When obtaining estimates from a house cleaning service, be sure to communicate clearly about your priorities and expectations. You may be able to reduce the cost if you eliminate certain tasks that you are able to do yourself. (Dusting, for example, is a time-consuming task that many homeowners don’t mind doing themselves, and eliminating it can lead to a significant cost saving.) On the other hand, if you want the peace of mind of knowing that everything is done, be clear about that as well to make sure the house cleaners can meet your expectations.

Hiring a housecleaning service, once thought to be a luxury affordable only to the very well-to-do, is becoming more common for the everyday, middle class person who can become overwhelmed with the sheer amount of “stuff” there is to do. Indeed, hiring a housecleaning service could improve your quality of life. Hiring a housecleaning service could result in less stress and more impulsive social invitations.

Hiring a housecleaning service could be one of the best things you could do for yourself!

Accepting Help: Harder Than You Think

Accepting help, or getting someone else to accept your help, can be much harder than you think. Pride and ego play a role, as can the desire to not be a burden on others. In fact, it is sometimes easier to accept the help of strangers than that of family and friends.

Let’s consider a few situations that are common helping opportunities.

Perhaps you know someone who is undergoing treatment for a disease or injury. Maybe this person is scheduled for surgery, maybe it’s ongoing treatment, maybe it’s just limited activity while the body has a chance to heal itself. You and probably many other friends and family members want to help this person while he or she is going through this period of time. You might offer to prepare meals, care for the kids, walk the dogs, run errands, or clean the house.

The tasks that need to be done are generally things that your friend is used to doing herself. She likes them done a certain way, and, even if she tends to complain about doing them, she really gets a certain amount of satisfaction in knowing that she’s done them. Releasing the responsiblity for these things to another person can be extremely challenging!

Sometimes it’s easier for someone to accept the help they need if that help is coming from a stranger, especially when that stranger is a professional in their field. For example, if your friend needs help bathing or taking care of personal hygiene, it’s going to be much easier for her to accept the help of a trained in-home care provider or a nurse rather than her well-meaning neighbor. The same is true for house cleaning.

Most people do not want their friends or even family to clean their toilets or scrub the soap scum off of their showers. But what if the help is coming from a professional housecleaning service? From strangers who clean toilets and remove soap scum for a living? Usually, this type of help is easier to accept because there isn’t a personal relationship involved. The housecleaning professional is just going to get the job done without judging the person or gossiping about the condition of the home (common fears of those needing help).

Other situations where people need help can include moving (in or out), getting a new job or starting a new business, getting married, and having a baby … just to name a few. There are numerous situations that create a need for help. Some people can easily ask for the help they need, but this is really difficult for others.

Please consider enlisting the help of a professional in whatever area of care is needed. Sometimes, that can make all the difference.
