House Cleaning … Who’s At Home Taking Care of It?

Quick … who’s the first person you think of when you think “house cleaning”?

Most of us think “Mom.” But it isn’t always the “lady of the house” who’s in charge of keeping the house clean anymore.

In our 38 years of providing professional house cleaning services to homeowners in the Fresno/Clovis area, we’ve increasingly answered initial inquiries by men, coordinated cleaning priorities and schedules with husbands, and maintained a clean and healthy home to meet dads’ high expectations. (And trust us, dads can be just as demanding as moms — sometimes even more so.)

Earlier this year, Parade Publications reported that “the latest Census shows that 32 percent of dads regularly care for their children (up from 26 percent in 2002), and among those with preschool-age kids, one in five dads is the primary caregiver. In households where mom works, that figure rises to nearly one in three.”

And in addition to caring for the kids, these dads are also cleaning the house … and that involves more than just taking out the trash!

Mini Mops, Inc. has seen this shift in our clientele as well. We work for stay-at-home dads, bachelors, single dads, and other solitary men. Our male clients like our systematic method of house cleaning as well as the exceptional results that our professional house cleaning crews can achieve in their homes.

We’re more than maids, we’re house cleaning professionals … and our results speak louder than any marketing message.

So we’d like to suggest that you surprise Dad with a gift certificate for house cleaning this Father’s Day. He’ll enjoy the time he reclaims as his own (that time that he doesn’t have to spend cleaning), AND he’ll get an exceptionally clean home (because we really know how to clean)!

Certain restrictions do apply — for example, the house to be cleaned must be located in our service area. Please call our office — (559) 264-6677 — for more details.

Until next time … Keep it clean!

“Fresh New Start” Winter Cleaning … Why Wait for Spring?

Posted in Cleaning Tips by Michele Peterson on January 11, 2013

A fresh start.

January is a traditional month for making a fresh new start. Some people start the year off with new resolutions, new goals, new outlooks, new plans.

Today, I want to suggest a new tradition for you … something we’ll call a “Fresh New Start” Winter Cleaning.

Basically, take the traditional spring cleaning, and do it now!

Lots has been written about the ritual of “Spring Cleaning.” (Here’s one of our own blog posts from a few years ago on the topic: https://minimops.wordpress.com/2010/03/17/time-for-spring-cleaning/) I’m suggesting that you not wait until spring to do this type of cleaning!

Think about it … You’ve probably taken down the holiday decorations at this point. Maybe you’re feeling a little sad that the holidays are over. Maybe the gray winter weather has got you feeling a little blue …

Maybe you’re just ready for that fresh new start that January seems to promise.

Let’s channel that into a fresh new CLEAN start for your home! A thorough, deep cleaning that leaves your house (and the things in it) sparkling and renewed.

The kind of cleaning that gives you a renewed appreciation of your home, and an increased joie de vivre.

Sounds good about now, doesn’t it?

So, who’s with me? Let’s celebrate the start of a new year by giving our homes a Fresh New Start Winter Cleaning!

(By the way, this works whether you are doing the cleaning yourself OR if you hire a professional house cleaning service to do it for you!)

Need some specific tips about what to do? Some ideas about what cleaning tasks you should tackle? Come back next week, when I’ll give you a checklist of some things to do.

In the meantime, why not share this article with a friend? Or, leave me a comment below.

Until next time … Keep it clean!

Remove the Cobwebs and Stop Sharing Your Home with Spiders

Posted in Cleaning Tips,Professional house cleaning by Michele Peterson on October 25, 2012
Tags: , ,

Cobwebs all over the house can be effective Halloween décor, but once the spooky holiday is over, cobwebs are just … well … creepy!

Because cobwebs don’t exist on their own. Where there are cobwebs, there are spiders. And, really, who likes sharing their home with spiders?

So here are some Mini Mops House Cleaning professional tips to make sure you find – and remove – all of those cobwebs:

Top 10 Places to Look

1. Corners of ceilings
2. Corners of rooms
3. Behind drapes and valances
4. Behind shutters and blinds
5. Inside lamp shades and light fixtures
6. Behind dressers and headboards
7. Behind TVs and entertainment units
8. Behind doors
9. Under furniture
10. Behind computer equipment

Equipment to Use

Once you’ve located the webs, you need to remove them. A cobwebber bristle attachment on the end of a long pole is one of the most commonly-used tools for this job. A simple broom also can work.

For more delicate areas, you may need to use a vacuum with a hose and attachment brush or nozzle.

The key is to find and remove both the cobwebs AND the spiders. A professional house cleaning service can help you remove the webs. And if you don’t want to deal with removing the spiders on your own, we suggest calling a professional exterminator to handle this task.

If you have additional strategies and tips for dealing with cobwebs, we invite you to share them in the comments below. Comments are reviewed for appropriate content before being published on this blog.

3 Ways to Get Someone Else to Pay for Your House Cleaning

Mini Mops House Cleaning suggests 3 Ways to Get Someone Else to Pay for Your House CleaningHave you ever met someone for lunch, and then had them pick up the tab?

What a treat! Am I right?

So imagine how it feels when someone picks up the tab for your house cleaning …

Here are three ways you can get that to happen:

#1 – A Disability or Worker’s Comp Claim

If you are truly physically unable to perform basic housecleaning tasks, you may be able to get your insurance claim to include professional house cleaning.

Ask for it!

The worst that can happen is that your request is denied. But you just may get lucky and get a “yes.”

#2 – A Homeowner’s Insurance Claim

If disaster strikes, and you’ve filed a homeowner’s insurance claim to repair the damage to your home, you may have coverage that includes a post-repair final cleanup, too.

Ask!

Coverages vary greatly from policy to policy, so this is something you have to ask about in regards to your own homeowner’s coverage. But, again, it’s worth asking the question.

#3 – A Gift Certificate

People give gift certificates for numerous occasions:

• Birthdays
• Holidays
• Mother’s Day
• Congratulations
• New Baby
• Get Well

The list can go on …

Your friends and family may be stumped as to what to get you. Or maybe what they think you’ll like and what you really want are very different things.

Give them a break.

Ask for what you want!

Very often, they will be relieved and happy that you did.

The common thread in getting someone else to pay for your house cleaning is to ask.

If you never ask, the answer always will be “no.” But if you do ask, sometimes you’ll get a “yes.”

Cleaning Up After a Disaster in Your Home

Flooding in the bathroom

What happens when something happens to your home?

Something major. Something bigger than you can handle on your own.

Typically, you’ll have to deal with your insurance company. That’s why we have homeowner’s insurance. Right? You’ll probably also work with a general contractor (and maybe some of his sub-contractors) as well as a restoration company if your disaster was a fire or flood.

You have to clean up the mess … literally.

Let’s look at what happened at Mary’s house recently.

A malfunctioning toilet flooded Mary’s upstairs guest bathroom one weekend. It was a guest bathroom, so Mary didn’t notice the toilet running, then overflowing … then water flooding the room.

The water seeped down into the floor – the ceiling of three rooms downstairs. It flowed down into the adjacent walls.

Mary had significant damage to her home by the time she noticed the problem and was able to turn the water off at the toilet.

She had a restoration company in her home for several days to dry things out. She hired a general contractor to repair the structural damage. The general contractor’s bid, which was submitted to and approved by Mary’s insurance company, included sub-contracted work performed by a plumber, electrician, floor installation expert, and a professional house cleaning service.

Yes, Mary’s homeowner’s policy included professional house cleaning to clean up after the repairs were done.

The last thing you need after cleaning up the mess of a home disaster is to clean up the mess from the repairs. When you can get it ALL done professionally – the final house cleaning, too – you can rest assured that it’s been done right.

NOW is the time to check into your specific policy coverages … BEFORE disaster strikes. Some proactive people even make lists of companies they would prefer to work with – based on referrals and recommendations by friends and family – so they have resources available when they need them.

Mini Mops House Cleaning has helped many general contractors with the final cleanup of jobs, including home repair projects paid for by an insurance claim. Sometimes the work is done as a sub-contractor under the overall bill of the general contractor. Other times, the homeowner’s insurance company pays for the house cleaning directly.

Every policy is different, and you MUST ask your own agent about your specific policy and what it does or does not cover.

While we can help you if disaster strikes, here’s hoping that we never need to!

There’s More to a Window Than Just the Glass

Posted in Cleaning Tips,Professional house cleaning by Michele Peterson on August 27, 2012

Now that the nights and mornings are beginning to get a little cooler, are you spending more time with your windows open again?

And have you noticed how dirty your window screens have gotten during the summer?

What about the tracks and the window sills?

Cleaning the window screens and tracks are some of the “once-in-awhile” tasks that often get neglected by most homeowners. This isn’t surprising, because they can be a time consuming job – especially if you have many windows or live in a location with a lot of dust.

A good window cleaner will clean all of these different parts of the window when he cleans your windows, including removing the screens to actually wash them. But what if you’re not ready to bring in the “big guns” quite yet?

While many professional house cleaning service businesses don’t do windows – and they won’t remove screens – most will accommodate a request to vacuum or dust the screens, clean the tracks, and wash the window sills. All of these tasks are probably not included in a typical maintenance cleaning agreement, but may be available by special request.

Be aware that this added work will take your house cleaning crew additional time, so plan accordingly.

There are many benefits to having clean window screens, tracks and sills. The most obvious is a cleaner view outside. But other benefits also include cleaner air inside, less dust being blown in by those cool nighttime breezes, and fewer dust-related allergy symptoms.

So go ahead and open those windows! Just be sure to clean your various window components first … or hire someone to do it for you.

Ceiling Fans – They Get Dirty Even When They’re in Motion

Posted in Cleaning Tips by Michele Peterson on August 12, 2012

Mini Mops House Cleaning suggests regular cleaning of your ceiling fan blades

We’ve all heard the phrase, “The rolling stone gathers no moss.” Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for ceiling fans!

Ceiling fans DO get dirty, even when they’re in constant motion.

During the hot summer months, many people run their ceiling fans 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Keeping the air circulating helps homeowners feel comfortable.

But it’s important to turn the fans off long enough to clean the blades once in awhile!

This is especially important if you are affected by indoor allergies related to dust. The blades gather a layer of dust, and then they can broadcast that dust if they’re not cleaned regularly.

If you have hired a professional house cleaning service to clean your home, they should be able to clean your ceiling fans, too. If this isn’t something that’s automatically included in your service, ask about adding it once a month or so.

Ceiling fan blades – keep ‘em moving, but keep ‘em clean!

Cleaning Your Outdoor Living Room

The weather is just about perfect in most areas right now …

Are you spending more time outside?

Do you use your patio or deck as an extension of your home? As an outside room?

Do you clean it accordingly?

Do you:

  • Clean the floor (sweep, mop, scrub, etc.)?
  • Dust the furniture?
  • Wash the light fixtures?
  • Clean the kitchen/grill?
  • Wash the windows?

I bet you do … at least to some degree!

Did you know that most professional house cleaning companies will incorporate outdoor living areas if you ask them to and if you add enough extra time to accommodate the extra work?

Mini Mops House Cleaning does!

Generally, if you want to add extra service like cleaning outdoor spaces, you should call and arrange this with the office PRIOR to your cleaning appointment.

You should not spring a special request like this on your workers without first clearing it with the management and/or scheduling staff of your house cleaning company. This is so they can make sure they have the supplies and equipment needed to accommodate your request, AND they can make the necessary adjustments to the schedule.

Just like with the interior of your home, you should be able to request a “spring cleaning” at the beginning of the outdoor living season, and then keep the space up with “maintenance cleaning” after that.

By the way, expect the same type of cleaning that happens indoors. Most house cleaning companies will not have the equipment or carry the insurance coverage to do heavy duty exterior cleaning like power washing.

Why not start the conversation with YOUR house cleaning company, and get your outdoor living area professionally cleaned?

Then you can sit back, relax, and enjoy!
